“Allah” any copyright control for this word?

Filed under: Public Issues — Pengayau @ 4:20 am

According to Wikipedia,Allah is the standard Arabic word for God.While the term is best known in the West for its use by Muslims as a reference to God, it is used by Arabic-speakers of all Abrahamic faiths, including Christians and Jews, in reference to “God”.The term was also used by pagan Meccans as a reference to the creator-god, possibly the supreme deity in pre-Islamic Arabia.

The concepts associated with the term Allah (as a deity) differ among the traditions. In pre-Islamic Arabia amongst pagan Arabs, Allah was not considered the sole divinity, having associates and companions, sons and daughters – a concept which Islam thoroughly and resolutely abrogated. In Islam, the name Allah is the supreme and all-comprehensive divine name. All other divine names are believed to refer back to Allah.Allah is unique, the only Deity, creator of the universe and omnipotent.Arab Christians today use terms such as Allāh al-ʼAb “God the Father” to distinguish their usage from Muslim usage. There are both similarities and differences between the concept of God as portrayed in the Qur’an and the Hebrew Bible.

According to Islamic belief, Allah is the proper name of God,and humble submission to His Will, Divine Ordinances and Commandments is the pivot of the Muslim faith.”He is the only God, creator of the universe, and the judge of humankind”.”He is unique (wahid) and inherently one (ahad), all-merciful and omnipotent.”The Qur’an declares “the reality of Allah, His inaccessible mystery, His various names, and His actions on behalf of His creatures.”

In Islamic tradition, there are 99 Names of God (al-asma al-husna lit. meaning: “The best names”) each of which evoke a distinct characteristic of Allah. All these names refer to Allah, the supreme and all-comprehensive divine name.[Among the 99 names of God, the most famous and most frequent of these names are “the Merciful” (al-rahman) and “the Compassionate” (al-rahim).

Most Muslims use the untranslated Arabic phrase “insha’ Allah” (meaning “God willing”) after references to future events.Muslim discursive piety encourages beginning things with the invocation of “bismillah”(meaning “In the name of God”).

There are certain phrases in praise of God that are favored by Muslims, including “Subhan-Allah” (Holiness be to God), “Alhamdulillah” (Praise be to God), “La-il-la-ha-illa-Allah” (There is no deity but God) and “Allāhu Akbar” (God is great) as a devotional exercise of remembering God (zikr). In a Sufi practice known as zikr Allah (lit. remembrance of God), the Sufi repeats and contemplates on the name Allah or other divine names while controlling his or her breath.

Arabic-speakers of all Abrahamic faiths, including Christians and Jews, use the word “Allah” to mean “God”.The Christian Arabs of today have no other word for ‘God’ than ‘Allah’.Even the Arabic-descended Maltese language of Malta, whose population is almost entirely Roman Catholic, uses Alla for ‘God’.Arab Christians for example use terms Allāh al-ʼab,meaning God the father, Allāh al-ibn mean God the son, and Allāh al-rūḥ al-quds,meaning God the Holy Spirit

Arab Christians have used two forms of invocations that were affixed to the beginning of their written works. They adopted the Muslim basm-Allah, and also created their own Trinitized basm-Allah as early as the eight century CE.The Muslim basm-Allah reads: “In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.” The Trinitized basm-Allah reads: “In the name of Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, One God.” The Syriac, Latin and Greek invocations do not have the words “One God” at the end. This addition was made to emphasize the monotheistic aspect of Trinitian belief and also to make it more palatable to Muslims.

According to Marshall Hodgson, it seems that in the pre-Islamic times, some Arab Christians made pilgrimage to the Kaaba, a pagan temple at that time, honoring Allah there as God the Creator.

“English and other European languages”

The history of the word “Allāh” in English was probably influenced by the study of comparative religion in 19th century; for example, Thomas Carlyle (1840) sometimes used the term Allah but without any implication that Allah was anything different from God. However, in his biography of Muhammad (1934), Tor Andræ always used the term Allah, though he allows that this ‘conception of God’ seems to imply that it is different from that of the Jewish and Christian theologies. By this time Christians were also becoming accustomed to retaining the Hebrew term “Yahweh” untranslated (it was previously translated as ‘the Lord’).

Languages which may not commonly use the term Allah to denote a deity may still contain popular expressions which use the word. For example, because of the centuries long Muslim presence in the Iberian Peninsula, the word ojalá in the Spanish language and oxalá in the Portuguese language exist today, borrowed from Arabic. This word literally means “God willing” (in the sense of “I hope so”).

Some Muslims leave the name “Allāh” untranslated in English.Sometimes this comes from a zeal for the Arabic text of the Qur’an and sometimes with a more or less conscious implication that the Jewish and Christian concept of God is not completely true in its details.Conversely, the usage of the term Allah by English speaking non-Muslims in reference to the God in Islam, Marshall G. S. Hodgson says, can imply that Muslims are worshiping a mythical god named ‘Allah’ rather than God, the creator. This usage is therefore appropriate, Hodgson says, only for those who are prepared to accept its theological implications.

“Comparative religion”

Some scholars have suggested that Muhammad used the term Allah in addressing both pagan Arabs and Jews or Christians in order to establish a common ground for the understanding of the name for God, a claim Gerhard Böwering says is doubtful.According to Böwering, in contrast with Pre-Islamic Arabian polytheism, God in Islam does not have associates and companions nor is there any kinship between God and jinn.Pre-Islamic pagan Arabs believed in a blind, powerful, inexorable and insensible fate over which man had no control. This was replaced with the Islamic notion of a powerful but provident and merciful God.

According to Francis Edwards Peters, “The Qur’an insists, Muslims believe, and historians affirm that Muhammad and his followers worship the same God as the Jews. The Quran’s Allah is the same Creator God who covenanted with Abraham”. Peters states that the Qur’an portrays Allah as both more powerful and more remote than Yahweh, and as a universal deity, unlike Yahweh who closely follows Israelites.

And the question is why here in Malaysia we need to made a Big Fuss out of nothing?Christians,Islam and Jews is sharing ONE COMMON believe that there is only ONE GOD regardless what names that we called IT.When we use the word “ALLAH” does it only subjected to the GOD in Islam?Does Allah or even GOD is subjected to Islam only?I believe the issue here is the Usage of the word “Allah” by Christians which in my point of view is harmless and there is nothing with it.If there is any other words in Malay,Chinesse,Tamil,Iban,Kadazan,Dusun or any other ethnic language that equivalent to the word “Allah” well,we might consider of using it instead of “Allah”.But there is none. But that issue shouldnt arise at all because the word “Allah” it self is an Arabic words which mean “GOD”.that is the basis of arguement..

Recently, the Home Minister had rejected the renewal of Permit for publication for “The Herald” for 2010.”The Herald” is the weekly Catholics magazine publish by the Catholics Church and only for distribution among more than 900,000 Catholics in Malaysia.

The weekly’s priest-editor, Reverend Father Lawrence Andrew, explained that the Catholic Church which publishes the multi-lingual weekly, had first applied for the annual licence in late July.

The Home Ministry had replied on Aug 5 and approved their application to publish in four languages: Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin and Tamil, but rejected their request to add a new language, Kadazandusun. The church received a second letter from the Home Ministry on Sept 3, which promptly retracted the approval given a month earlier even though the RM800 publishing fee had been paid up.

The permit is being annualy and it should be ended in 31 December 2009.In the latest chain of event,The Home Ministry is renewing The Herald’s permit for publication and says that it was not revoked and that the renewal of its permit for 2010 is being processed.

A ministry official was quoted as saying that “there was never an issue of revoking the permit for The Herald.”
He told news portal Malaysiakini that the last letter sent to The Herald in September was a notification that the application to publish in the Kadazandusun language was not approved, and that a refund of the permit fee could be made.

He said that the reason for the directive for the refund was that The Herald had paid its fees too early.
He said that the ministry will only process the permit three months before the old permit expires, as in this case it is in January 2010.

In July,Reverend Father Lawrence Andrew has apply for the renewal of the Permit for Publication. From that time onwards, there has been a lots of controversies regardings the usage of the word “Allah”.there are several Muftis who against the usage of “Allah” word by Non Islam and giving a stupid excuses such as “Penggunaan perkataan “Allah” di kalangan bukan Islam boleh menimbulkan kekeliruan di kalangan orang2 Islam, oleh itu kami membantah keras penggunaan perkataan “Allah” selain daripada orang2 Islam”.It did not stops there, they has re-acted untill certain extent that one Officer from JAIS publicly challenged anyone who can show him if there is any words in the Bible which refer to “Allah”

Personally to me,that was insulting to my religion. We live in a multi-racial and multi-religious country, such act was is insulting to the Federal Constitution which clearly stated:

“Though Islam is the religion of the Federation, Article 11 provides that every person has the right to profess and practice his own religion. Every person has the right to propagate his religion, but state law and, in respect of the Federal Territory, federal law may control or restrict the propagation of any religion, doctrine or belief among persons professing the Muslim religion. There is, however, freedom to carry on missionary work among non-Muslims.”

I was wondering, why there is no action taken against that Officer??In my understandings,it can cause Racial tension. It can posesed potential security threat to the country. And there is where ISA(Internal Security Act) should be used. But there is nothing that been done,no action being taken.WHY?????and to make things worse, none of our Christian Ministers,MPs or even YBs dare to speak out in this issue. As if the Catholics Church were fighting in his own cause and not for the sake of Christians????

I bet if it was the Christians,Budhist or Hindus who gave such statement in the public,i believe things were gonna be different?WHY??
Di manakah Kebebasan Beragama??1MALAYSIA kah ini??

  1. Allah had a wife. Her name was Allat (contracted from Al’ilat), and she survived right up to the day of Muhammed, for she was the goddess of choice in Taif and one of Muhammed’s “swans” of the “Satanic verses” in Al-Koran, Sura 53. Allat came along the trade routes with Allah not only in the inscriptions in stone. Allat and Allah came together, stayed in power with equal force for at least a thousand years in Mecca, and they were accepted by Muhammed. Allah was retained in the Kaaba, and Allat was brought into the Islamic pantheon in Sura 53. Her brief tenure as ruling goddess was damning proof that Islam is a pagan religion.
Allah is not in the Bible, and Elohim is not in the Koran.

It is not necessary for us to debate with those who want to be “ARABS” and those who want to be “JEWS” or “EUROPEANS”. It is best for Malaysians to be Malaysians instead of “copycats” quarrelling over the right to use certain words to call their Almighty – use the word “TUHAN” or your own local vernacular as is “TOPA” in BIDAYUH!!!! After all neither Islam or Christianity is BORN in Malaysia. Somehow we are all “converts” at one stage or another in our family history.

The right or wrong will only be known the minute you close your eyes on your deathbed. Too late then for you to know the TRUTH – whether his name is GOD, ALLAH, TUHAN, YAHWEH, or TOPA….. In the end, it will be your late father, your late mother, or late grandparents or even your spouse who will come to collect your soul as many stories told to me before by my friends or relatives related to me. Just yesterday YB Dr. Tiki told me what her late mother told his son the day before she died, “Your father has come to take me home”. Amen…

Important now is whether we, the Natives of Sabah and Sarawak, allow the Federal Constitution to continue to make us, “aliens” in our own homeland! Neither, GOD, ALLAH, YAHWEH, TUHAN, TOPA or whatever his TRUE Name maybe, ILRAHMAN or ILRAHIM, can help us to progress except ourselves as voters to exercise our rights to live peacefully in this world. Why should others want to use it anyway? If you don’t believe in your own name for Him, then get converted into Islam.

It amazes me why you want to confuse Believers in Malaysia by using “ALLAH” in the BIBLE when the European version never uses “Allah”. Only in Malaysia, some Christians faith insist on “copyright” issue on the word “ALLAH. Enough politics on religion – you want your God to be called “ALLAH”, change your religion to Islam. If “GOD” or “TUHAN” is wrong then all should become Muslim so your Almighty be “ALLAH” so there be no more quarrel or argument.

Malaysia faces graver issues other than the right to use “ALLAH” everywhere you want. It is NOT your need nor our needs. If those who have use it disagree, accept without any question.

To politise it as to-day, please remember what is happening in the Middle East now, especially in Palestine, Iraq and Yemen. Deaths everywhere even in Pakistan and Afghanistan and almost every day. My point is be happy that we have not reached that stage yet, but if we keep on arguing about “who have the right” to use the word “ALLAH” in their religious books and other media, we will be quarelling benefitting NO ONE in the end.

Being all Malaysians, I believe the ALMIGHTY, himself, may be laughing his heart out how stupid we are that being “converts” in the first place to the Jewish and Arab philosophy of “one GOD”, IF we were to quarell just we all want to have “copyrights” to the word “ALLAH”.

It is important to realise that the “Freedom to profess one’s religion” must NOT be confused with the “right to use” the word “ALLAH”. What about the right fo MUSLIMS to protect their faith by not BEING confused by potential Christain missionaries, “who can and will say, ‘aha we are the same because our GOD is also ALLAH’.”

Look, the Traditional Bidayuhs have already being fooled by past missionaries who insisted that we were “PAGANS”, because don’t pray every Sunday, etc. But I tell you all, it was, is and will wrong to think and believe that my ancestors were “PAGANS” because they were poor and illiterate.

If the Bidayuh “BIBLE” were written earlier, you will see that we believe in GOD and in GOD’s ways. We don’t pray every Sunday, because a prayer done by one High Priest or his Assistants can last for one or two years or more. Our prayers and its sessions are ritualized because being an EGALITARIAN society based on communalism, there is no need to dominate or use religion to survive on other’s labour. We worship the Almighty through the spirits of our own past elders who knew GOD’S ways. His name is TOPA.

We do not object to the use of the word “TOPA” by our Christian brothers and sisters. They change TOPA to “ALLAH” for Bidayuhs who get converted to Islam. It is perfectly all right with me as only on the minute I die I will definitely know “who my Maker is” though I strongly believe that it will be my father or mother or both who will come to take me HOME”.

May the Almighty be with you all.

  3. Pengayau,

My first post is in response to your article. Historically, the word ALLAH does not appear in neither any early Jewish or Arab writings, nor their lips. ALLAH is a term only applicable to Muslims and Islam, and was derived during the early history of Islam. The name ALLAH refers to an idol which surrounded the Kaaba and is a lunar based deity, hence the crescent. Muhd. wanted this name to be used to represent GOD in order to gain support from the Arabs. He must’ve seen the unity of the surrounding JEWS who believed in one God and was jealous of this and saw the need for his own political mileage! Prophets have only been sent to the JEWS and many both old and current writings both religious and non-religious attest to this fact.

The God of Christianity has a name and is called, ELOHIM, YAHWEH, IMMANUEL, YESHUA, JESUS etc. These names can be used instead of ALLAH which is lunar deity. Having the name ALLAH to represent God in the INJIL is a DECEPTION! Such deception is as old as saying that there were THREE WISE MAN who visited Jesus when he was a baby at the stable where HE was born. If you study the scriptures very carefully and let the Holy Spirit guide you, you will notice that the number of wise men was never specified and that they visited the Baby in a HOUSE after the manger episode. What I’m trying to say here is that don’t be misled by Satan, the father of lies. There’s no such thing as ALLAH equivalent to the Christian understanding of GOD. I agree with the M’sian government’s move to ban the use of the word ALLAH in the INJIL. We have various names for GOD in our scriptures, use these instead!

    • Job,

Thanks for your lengthy comments and for being the 1st to post a comment on my Blogs. Thanks once again. But i would like to made it very clear for once and for all,we are all CONVERTS,either MUSLIMS or CHRISTIANS.As for Christians,we have been using the BIBLE in Bahasa Indonesia for a long time, even once our BIBLE in Bahasa Iban has been banned for the usage of the word ALLAH TAALA.

If you to ask me wether it is right or wrong,i couldnt answer you as i said earlier,im not a Religious Scholar. But im questioning why now?why the issue of the usage of the word “ALLAH” only arise when this particular “The Herald” apply for the renewal of their Publishing Permits? If they were to probihited the usage of the word “ALLAH” by Non Muslims, why now?

why dont they just banned the usage at the first place?i mean inclusive the usage in the BIBLE of Bahasa Indonesia straight away?why wait untill “The Herald” wanted to apply for their Annually Publsihing Permits and only then they probihited it?For your lenghty comment about those Political Milage by Muhammad, well, neither you or me or anyone else were right about it.

It is just a Theologies.Your interpretion,my interpretion and the others interpretion might be differ..there is no ABSOLUTE about it.Even in Islam there is a lots of Sect,to name a few,Maliki,Hanafi,Hambali and Syafie. If you has name a few of GOD names for our Christianity, well,Islam has 99 of GOD names.

Untill certain extent that you said that i have been misled by Satan, the Father of all lies and had not let the Holy Spirit to guide me,i think that is some sort of personal attack on me as an Christian.Neither you or anyone else can judge me or the opposite. It is between me and HIM.

What i want here is an academic discussion and not personal attack.Anyway,i believe that i will not LOST neither it is a DECEPTION for me to use or believe in The HOLY FATHER by the word of ALLAH or more exatly using the Bahasa Indonesia version of The Holy Bible.Whatever names that we called HIM,there is only ONE GOD,and one day sooner or later,we will met him in the Heavenly Kingdom…

      Comment by Pengayau — November 17, 2009 @ 6:01 am | Reply

      • Yes Pengayau, there is only one GOD and no one can come to the Father but through the Son! Besides that there is no GOD! Salvation is given by GRACE.
“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

This is GOD not ALLAH. ALLAH is a Muslim understanding of god and is not the same as a Christian understanding of GOD. Christians,Islam and Jews do not share the same concept of God as you have so erroneously stated. Please do your homework! Please don’t use GOD for your copyright arguments.

        Comment by Job — November 17, 2009 @ 7:21 am | Reply

        • Job,There is no need for you to quote those Verse from our Holy Bible. It is not the Theologies arguement that i have here.I hade made it very clear, whatever names that we called HIM,there is only ONE GOD.It is not you,me or anyone else to question our Heavenly Father even about what we want or we should call him.Im talking about the usage of the word “ALLAH” by Non Muslim.

As far im concerned, there is no copyright control for this word.it doesnt belong or subjected to any Religion exclucively. In the Arabs countries, they are Christians and they do use the word “ALLAH” in their daily prayer, and we never heard of any objection from the Muslims.I believe im a sinners like all of us.You seems like you want to preach about Religions here, with HUMBLE heart,as a matter of fact,we Christians were ask by GOD to be HUMBLE with one and another,i really appreciate your views and opinion my fren.

I dont think it is proper for us to talk or to have such a mentality that we know everything and anything,as if we know how OUR HEAVENLY FATHER works.Lets us not let the differences in idea or opinion as our stumbling block to LISTEN and OBEY HIS WORDS.Be it “ALLAH” or whatever names that we called HIM,He is there and there is only one. No,i never said that Christians,Islam and Jews share the same concept of GOD particularly but we all do believe that there is only ONE GOD…

I had to put an end to this disccusion my frens if it still dragging into THEOLOGICAL rather than the real issue that i highlighted here in my Blogs.Once again,Thanks Bro and God Bless Us regardless you are Christians,Muslims,Jews or whatever Faith that you have….

          • Pengayau,

I have travelled to Arabia and have many Arabian Christian friends. FYI, they do not use the term ALLAH in their prayers. Please get your facts straight and don’t be spoon fed by the media and by what you heard or read without first questioning the source. I too was once like that, until I experienced it for myself. I encourage you to go out and experience it too!

That said, only Muslims have the right the the word “Allah’ as it originated from their scriptures. ALLAH is a Muslim understanding of god and is not the same as a Christian understanding of GOD.If you studied Arabic manuscripts written between the period of the Acts and prior to the coming of the Muhd 400 years later, you will note that the term ALLAH was never used! I know because studying ancient manuscripts is my job!

Writings that came after that i.e. the translation of the Bible that coined this term to make the gospel ‘local’ at the expense of the Good News. That is what Paul meant when he said, “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.”

As a Christian you should well know that Christ is THE revelation of God himself and that is the only way. Christ has shown us the WAY! All has been revealed and the Bible documents this. That’s the basis of Christian faith and is what makes a person a Christian! As Christians, we are called to WITNESS and SHARE the gospel, that is HUMILITY my friend. You seriously need to read the scriptures carefully.

And for the record, you did say “Christians,Islam and Jews is sharing ONE COMMON believe that there is only ONE GOD regardless what names that we called IT” and that means the same as, ‘Christians,Islam and Jews share the same concept of GOD” the phrase ‘is sharing’ is in the present tense which is also used to show a fact!

Back to the question, the government has every right to ban the use of ALLAH in the Christian publications in the malay language.! The term belongs only to Islam as stated in the QURAN.

On a parting note, you wrote this blog and invited responses but you obviously cannot handle the responses that are coming in and dismiss them as emotional, theological and what not! If you can’t handle it, DON’T WRITE!

  5. If anyone wants to admit that Allah is God, then the muslims should be happy. In the Quran, many times over, Allah say He is the Almighty Creator of All the universe and whatever in it. So if creatures including any man and woman say Allah is God, what is the problem? Well, Allah is not a bahasa melayu word. Inserting Allah in place of Tuhan in bahasa melayu bibles on this basis is therefore fundamentally wrong! So if christians recognise that Allah is God, then use Allah to mean God in bibles of all language.

Yes,we do know that but the fact is we have been using the word ALLAH for an ages before and why only now that the decided to BANNED the usage of the words by Non-Islam?

The basis of arguement here is the word Allah in context of usage and not the true meaning of it or whatsoever.

  7. Allah word is not copyrighted but by it existence Allah can only be applied without being referred to having NO SON and Jesus was the prophet. That’s all.

    • Krani,

Islam believe in one God which is Allah

Islam believe in Muhammad as the Messenger Of Allah

Islam believe in all 25 Prophets including Jesus Christ as Messenger Of Allah

Islam believe that to denied Jesus Christ is equivalent to denied Allah itself

Islam believe that “Bahawa aku naik saksi tiada Tuhan lain selain Allah dan Muhammad itu Pesuruh Allah””

There is no verse in the Holy Quran which said that only Muslims can use the word Allah

But what that make ISLAM and CHRISTIANS differ was our UNDERSTANDING of God(Allah)

In CHRISTIANITY,we believe in the Holy Trinity which is The Father,Son and the Holy Spirit

But in ISLAM,”Allah itu tidak besekutu dan tidak di sekutukan”

These two are the MAJOR differences between ISLAM and CHRISTIANITY

Ps:Where is the Point that ALLAH word is Exclusively for Islam?
