As local government seeks to find resolution, natives told to prove the land is theirs.

Today some two hundred and fifty Sebuyau Iban held a peaceful demonstration outside a Sarawak district office today to protect their communal forest.

“This Sebangan forest that they want to destroy is home for orangutans, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and deer,” said Numpang Suntai, one of the leaders of the action. Together with members of the community, they waited for government and company representatives to enter the office to begin talks with member of the community over the land.

No progress was reported as, in line with government policy, the civil servants stated that the burden of proof was on the indigenous peoples to prove that they were, in fact, rights holders of the territory. “In fact, we have been here since any government was formed in this area,” said Nicolas Mujah, local indigenous rights advocate and member of the community. “I even showed them proof that our elders were born in this area since the Brooke period.”

Sarawak’s constitution allows native rights to be established over areas occupied before 1958.

The area under threat includes rivers and mountain forests. An oil palm plantation is planned by the company after the forest has been logged.

A further meeting is planned with the Superintendant of the Land and Survey, Kota Samarahan Division, the next level of authority.
